Broken beauty

Tulips are tempting me with increasing variety of colours, shapes and scents every spring. The idea is to get all variants of this incredible plant – never mind the price. The number one is always rococo tulip, belonging to the parrot group, the strangest one, in which the uttermost beauty melts with illness. Tulips owe their incredible shapes to the Tulip Breaking Virus. Those broken are smaller than healthy ones, and they degenerate slowly, as Carolus Clusius, the Flemish botanist wrote: “ any tulip thus changing its original colour is usually ruined afterwards and so wanted only to delight its master’s eyes with this variety of colours before dying, as if to bid him a last farewell.”
